After losing the NXT Women’s Championship to Shayna Baszler at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans on Saturday night, it is apparent that Ember Moon is set to soon make a major impact on the WWE women’s evolution.
Moon tasted defeat in New Orleans after the referee called for the bell while she was locked in the Kirifuda Clutch. Moon tried desperately to reach the ropes or force Baszler to break the hold.
Baszler did well to keep Moon in the middle of the ring, and eventually the champion passed out, thus leaving the official no choice but to end the match.
Moon fell just short of winning the NXT Championship from Asuka on multiple occasions, but after The Empress of Tomorrow was called up to the main roster last year, she won the vacant title and became the unquestioned face of the NXT women’s division.
It was a fragile time for women’s wrestling in NXT. However, Moon managed to hold down the fort and bridge the gap until reinforcements such as Baszler and Kairi Sane were added to the roster.
Now that the NXT women’s division has been reloaded with talent, it seems likely that the time is near for Moon to become a major player on the main roster.
A golden opportunity could await her on the WrestleMania stage, as women from Raw, SmackDown Live and NXT are all scheduled to take part in the inaugural WrestleMania women’s Battle Royal.
Established main roster Superstars such as Sasha Banks, Bayley, Becky Lynch, Natalya and Naomi are all in the match, but rather than having one of them win it, an up-and-coming star would likely benefit far more.
Moon fits the bill, especially if WWE plans to call her up soon and immediately make her a title contender on either Raw or SmackDown Live.
There is no question that there is still work to be done with Ember in terms of becoming more polished on the mic and building a more defined character, but she is already an incredible athlete who has a long list of excellent matches under her belt.
Moon also boasts arguably the most devastating finishing move in all of wrestling with the Eclipse.
The twisting Stunner off the top rope has put down nearly every female Superstar who has gone through NXT since Moon’s debut, and the mere presence of the move is something that can be utilized as a constant storyline involving Ember on the main roster.
If Moon hits it a time or two in the WrestleMania women’s Battle Royal, it will cause fans who have never seen her before to immediately take notice. It will put her in the perfect position to carry the momentum over to the main roster.
There isn’t much left for Moon to accomplish in NXT, but Raw and SmackDown will present her with some amazing opportunities in terms of opponents she hasn’t yet faced.
Sasha, Bayley, Becky, Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax could all give Ember great matches, but her best potential dance partner may be Charlotte Flair.
The daughter of “Nature Boy” Ric Flair is often heralded as the most physically gifted women’s Superstar in all of WWE, but Moon can unquestionably give her a run for her money.
Moon has already made a name for herself in NXT, and her performance against Baszler on Saturday was another step toward making her a major star.
The women’s division is more stacked now than it ever has been in WWE, and Moon has a chance to be a significant part of its success moving forward.
