Drive-By Truckers have announced their plans to perform their acclaimed 2001 double album, Southern Rock Opera, in its entirety during their upcoming tour. The Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour will kick off with a series of shows in June and July, followed by a break before resuming in the fall. In a recent interview with Matt Hendrickson for Garden & Gun, Patterson Hood, the frontman of Drive-By Truckers, shared the reasons behind revisiting Southern Rock Opera on tour. He explained, “It’s like a perfect combination of different factors. We’re not quite ready to create a new album yet, as we’ve all been involved in other projects. Fans have been requesting this for years, and guitarist Mike Cooley always joked, ‘We’ll do it when we can do it on ice’ [laughs]. It was a great way to set a high bar. Although we haven’t figured out how to do it on ice, I’m still holding onto that dream. We discussed it for five years until we realized we had to follow through, or else we’d look like fools. So, this year just felt like the right time to make it happen.”
In a press statement, Hood further elaborated, “We’ll be performing songs from the original release, along with a few additional tracks that relate to its themes and perspectives. We’ll also have a special encore set that will vary each night.
