SZA’s mind is solely focused on “Good Days” following the Grammy Awards. After her performance, she was quickly brought to the stage to accept the award for best R&B song for her track “Snooze.” During her acceptance speech, SZA’s astonishment and gratitude were evident.
“It’s the culmination of everything. From the moments leading up to it, even seeing Lizzo and not fully comprehending what was happening and feeling lost. Then I caught sight of her and it hit me. I realized what was going on,” shares SZA, 34, who is collaborating with Mastercard for their Priceless Planet Coalition, exclusively with PEOPLE.
She continues, “I was genuinely shocked and confused, just trying not to miss receiving my award.” Reflecting on the moments backstage before the incident, SZA mentions that she was taking her time changing because she didn’t think any of her nominated categories were up next.
“I thought, ‘I think I’ll head home now.’ And as I was getting ready, someone told me, ‘You need to hurry up and get to your seat,'” recalls the singer of “Nobody Gets Me.” “Then a woman started shouting, ‘Run, run, run.’ So I assumed they were rushing me to my seat for a camera shot or something, but they didn’t lead me to my seat. They led me to the stage.”
Leading up to the night, SZA had the most nominations and nerves were getting to her. Now that it’s all over, she feels nothing but gratitude.
“I’m simply grateful and relieved, mostly,” she expresses. “It feels like I’ve been holding my breath for a long time. So it’s a relief to finally let it out.”
To her surprise, she experienced a sense of “peace” during the show, which she had anticipated to be a “huge, intimidating moment” in her mind. “I swear, it was the most terrifying thing I had ever experienced beforehand, and I didn’t think I would make it through, but I can’t believe I did. And the fact that I did is a relief in itself,” she says, adding that the highlight of her night was witnessing Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder’s performances.
“I am deeply grateful to my parents, both my mother and father, as well as God, Top Dawg, Punch, all of TDE, and my fellow siblings at TDE. I would also like to express my gratitude to my godparents and my niece,” she continued. Overwhelmed with emotion, the singer apologized, “I’m sorry, I’m just really overwhelmed right now.” She struggled to find the words, saying, “You don’t truly understand. I have come such a long way, and I can’t believe that this is actually happening. It feels surreal.” Apart from her captivating performance of “Kill Bill,” SZA also premiered her new song “Saturn” from her upcoming album Lana at the Grammys, in collaboration with Mastercard. The music video for the song showcases SZA’s deep passion for sustainability and environmental causes.
According to the singer, “‘Saturn’ explores the yearning and longing for a better world, a desire to escape to another place. However, since that is not possible, we must find something worth preserving here.” In the music video, she even wore a top made entirely of seeds, symbolizing her commitment to saving the planet.
Through the partnership with Mastercard, an impressive 100 million trees will be restored. Fans can actively participate by using their Mastercard to make a purchase with Lyft and/or SiriusXM. Once they do so, a tree will be planted. Additionally, Mastercard cardholders have the opportunity to win a tree seed from SZA’s “Saturn” performance outfit.
