The 2023 Emmy Awards will be held in 2024 after delays due to the writers’ and actors’ strike. The awards ceremony was held on January 15th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted by Anthony Anderson. Unsurprisingly, the big winners included heavy hitters such as Succession, The Bear, Beef and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver It was a big night for prestige dramas.
Despite debate over whether certain shows are properly categorized, this year’s Emmy wins could mean an increase in drama trends.
It’s worth noting that most of the major awards went to shows that straddle the line between comedy and drama. “The Bear,” a stressful comedy-drama about a chef who takes over his family’s failing restaurant, won the Outstanding Comedy Series award. The show won the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Jeremy Allen White also won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear, and his co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach also won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Ayo Edebiri also won an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Bear.”
Kuma’s success was not limited to acting. Creator Christopher Storer won Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series for the episode “Review” and Outstanding Writer for a Comedy Series for another episode in the series, “System”.
Just as “The Bear” mixed comedy and drama, the same can be said for “Succession.” “Success” dominated the drama category. A satirical comedy-drama depicting a family dispute over business succession won an award in the Outstanding Drama Series category. Matthew Macfadyen also won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Tom Wambsgans in the series. Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin also had great leads. The Succession episode “Connor’s Wedding” won Mark Mylod the Emmy Award for Best Directing and Jesse Armstrong for Best Writing for a Drama Series.
